Angelique's Journey to Education: A Story of God's Goodness
Angelique managed to complete her primary education at 32 years old. Her life is a testimony of God’s grace and strength in times of adversity.
What motivated you to go back to school and finish?
I have always loved education since I was young. The education system in my country, Rwanda, is different from the one here in Kenya. I did very well in my primary education. However, the problem was school fees. The day my parents told me they could not afford to send me to high school, my heart sank.
What were your initial thoughts or feelings when you decided to go back to school?
I felt excited. I was just excited about my future. It's inside me; I’ve always loved being in school. I didn't even worry about my age or anything else. The good thing about it is that we were in an adult school, and some of my classmates were in their 50s and 60s.
How did the kids respond to you as a classmate?
We met during exams, when they put us together with the rest of the younger primary students. Some of them were excited to see us, while others found it amusing that we, being older, were sitting with them in the same class. There were also those who were surprised. The funniest part was when they laughed during the photo session with us!
Did you face any challenges/receive support from your family or friends?
It was a mixed reaction. My mum was so encouraging and happy for me; she knows my plans for my education and how passionate I have been since I was a young girl. My siblings were happy for me too. My sister prayed a lot for me. However, some of my friends laughed at my idea. They said that I am too old and this is not a time for school, but a time to look for money.
What message would you like to share with other refugees or adults considering returning to school?
It's never too late to pursue your dreams, education can change your life at any age. (Have) perseverance to overcome challenges.
I started in 2017, because of issues with school fees, I managed to complete in 2023. It’s putting more effort and trusting that God will provide and see you through it all by His grace.
What do you plan to do next after completing your Primary education?
I have already started learning at high school level. I took a break because of my work schedule. I would love to go back and continue so that I can complete my high school education.
